How to Hold a Wine Glass

small details elevate every sip

From the choice of the wine to how you hold the glass, every detail matters when it comes to enjoying wine. The way you hold a wine glass can impact your overall experience. It’s not just about looking elegant; it’s also about preserving the wine’s temperature, aroma and taste. Read our blog for details on the proper way to hold a wine glass.

Why Holding a Wine Glass Properly Matters

There are three main reasons why holding your wine glass properly will help you get the most out of your wine experience.

1. Temperature Control

Your hands naturally emit heat, especially from your palms. Holding a wine glass with too much skin contact can warm the wine, affecting its temperature and potentially dulling its intended flavours and aromas. To fully appreciate a wine’s profile, it’s best to hold the glass by the stem, keeping the wine at its ideal serving temperature.

2. It Keeps Things Clean

Your hands naturally produce oils, and eating with your fingers can add grease or food residue. These can transfer to your wine glass, introducing unwanted aromas and altering the wine’s flavour. Smudges on the glass can also hide the wine’s true colour, which is an essential part of fully appreciating the wine.

3. It Can Enhance Flavour

Holding a wine glass correctly can save you from spills and stains while also ensuring a smooth, controlled swirl. And swirling isn’t just for show; it’s essential for wine tasting. A good swirl aerates the wine, releasing its aromatic compounds. This matters because smell plays a bigger role than taste in how we perceive flavour. By swirling, you amplify the aromas, enhancing the wine’s overall flavour profile.

The Proper Way to Hold a Wine Glass

Hold the Stem:

Holding the stem prevents your hand’s heat from warming the wine and keeps the bowl smudge-free, allowing you to enjoy the wine’s appearance and aroma.

The most traditional and recommended way to hold a wine glass is by the stem:

  • Gently pinch the stem between your thumb and forefinger.
  • Allow your other fingers to rest lightly against the stem for balance.

Pinch the Base of the Stem:

For an alternative grip, you can hold the glass by pinching the base where the stem meets the foot:

  • Use your thumb and forefinger to grip the base of the stem lightly.
  • This grip is less common but equally effective in preserving the wine’s temperature.

Pinch the Base:

Another option, though less traditional, is to hold the wine glass by its base:

  • Lightly grip the flat base between your thumb and fingers.
  • This method keeps your hand completely away from the bowl, preserving the wine’s temperature.

What to Avoid When Holding a Wine Glass

Don’t Grip the Bowl: Avoid wrapping your hand around the bowl of the glass. While it might feel natural or secure, it has several downsides. Your hand’s warmth will quickly change the temperature of the wine and your fingerprints will obscure the clarity of the wine.

Avoid Over-Gripping the Stem: While holding the stem is correct, gripping it too tightly can look awkward and uncomfortable. A light, natural touch is ideal.

Tips for Different Types of Wine Glasses

Knowing how to hold different wine glasses properly not only enhances your wine tasting experience but also helps preserve the ideal temperature and aroma of each wine. Whether you’re sipping red, white, sparkling, or using stemless glasses, here’s how to hold each one for the best results.

Red Wine Glass: These glasses often have a larger bowl, allowing for aeration. Holding the stem ensures you can swirl the wine easily to release its aromas.

White Wine Glass: With a smaller bowl, these glasses are designed to maintain cooler temperatures, making it essential to avoid touching the bowl.

Sparkling Flutes: Always hold the stem to preserve the bubbles and prevent warming the sparkling.

Stemless Glasses: For these, hold the glass at its base or sides lightly to minimize heat transfer.

Mastering how to hold a wine glass is a small but impactful detail that enhances the enjoyment of wine. By holding the stem or base, you’re not only protecting the wine’s integrity but also adding a touch of sophistication to your experience.
