What is Bloom?
In grape growing, bloom refers to the flowering stage of the vine. After bud break in early spring, shoots begin to grow and form clusters. Around late spring to early summer, depending on the weather and grape variety, those clusters develop tiny, fragrant flowers.
These aren’t your typical garden blooms. Grape flowers are small, greenish and often overlooked, but they play a big role. This is the moment when pollination occurs, and each successful flower becomes a future grape berry. It’s nature’s way of setting the stage for the vintage to come.
Why is Bloom so Important?
Bloom is when the vineyard’s potential is set. If the weather is too cold, too wet or too windy, pollination may be disrupted, leading to a poor fruit set. This means fewer berries per cluster and ultimately, a smaller harvest.
On the other hand, a smooth bloom with ideal conditions leads to uniform clusters and healthy yields. For winemakers, it’s the first real sign of what the vintage might look like. At Colnaeri Estate Winery, we’re watching carefully, hoping for warm, dry days and gentle breezes. These are the perfect conditions that help the flowers self-pollinate and transform into berries.
Bloom Timing and Duration
Bloom usually occurs in late spring to early summer, depending on the grape variety and climate. At our vineyard, this often falls in early to mid-June, though every year is slightly different. Weather, winter dormancy and spring conditions all influence when bloom begins. Bloom typically lasts about 8 to 10 days, though this can vary. After flowering, the clusters go through a stage called fruit set, when the fertilized flowers start to swell and form what will eventually become full, juicy grapes. It’s a short window, but it holds a long-lasting impact. The success of bloom largely determines the size and quality of the year’s harvest, making it one of the most critical stages in the growing season.
From Bloom to Bottle
It’s humbling to think that every bottle of wine begins with something as small and delicate as a flower. Bloom is the beginning of transformation…from vine to grape and grape to glass. The flowers may be fleeting, but they determine the path ahead, setting the stage for fruit development, harvest timing and wine character. When you open a bottle from this year’s harvest, you’ll be tasting decisions and conditions that began with these tiny blossoms.

This curiosity inspired us to create a new offering for our guests: Touring From Bloom to Barrel Experience! Join us at the winery for this fun and unique opportunity to see the vineyard up close. You’ll learn all about this beautiful time at the winery including the method in which grapes are grown, cared for, maintained, analyzed and ultimately picked before exploring the production floor where the grapes end their journey. An experienced Colaneri staff member will guide you on your journey while you sample 4 wines, have multiple exquisite photo opportunities, and even have a chance visit with a member of the Colaneri Family!
Aside from guided tours, we typically don’t allow guests to walk through the vines for safety and vineyard health reasons. If you’re not able to join us on the tour, you’re more than welcome to admire the vineyard from the tasting room and from the Piazza Colaneri. The vines may look peaceful, but this is a critical moment in their growth. Avoiding foot traffic helps us protect the fragile flowers and ensure the best possible harvest.
